Santorini is one of the biggest hot spots for tourism in the world. I was lucky enough to visit while I was on a solo Europe trip and enjoyed every moment of it. When I was researching things to do in Santorini, a lot of the posts were all about Oia and the blue domes. I learned that while those places are a special part of Santorini, there is so much more on the island that is just as striking, if not more.
The Ring Road in Iceland is a road that goes all the way around the perimeter of the country, hitting many of its most famous spots + more. It seemed a bit ambitious to plan to drive the whole road, but knowing how small the country is and how determined we were, we knew we could tackle it.
On our kayaking trip with IceGuide, Daniel and I got to paddle past glaciers and icebergs, walk on them, physically stand on them and push them apart, and marvel at their beauty up close and personal.
Had I known this from the start, I would have never thrown the fit that I did right before I decided “f**** it” and booked it the night before we went.
Going on a trip to Iceland definitely requires a great deal of preparation. Even if you are from a rainy and windy place, nothing compares to the wind and rain in Iceland. We’re glad that coming out of the trip we can say that we were very well prepared for all of the elements we met. Here’s a list of the important items we packed (or wished we packed):
Renting some sort of a vehicle for our Iceland trip felt like a no-brainer. Public transportation doesn’t really exist outside of Reykjavik (the main hub) and we weren’t interested in the tour bus route. We really loved our decision to rent a campervan and wouldn’t have done it any other way (hashtag no ragrets).
Traveling by myself was one of the best things I’ve done in my twenty-one years of life. I gained so much confidence in myself and my abilities during that time and I would do it again and again and again. It isn’t always safe for women to travel alone, but I didn’t see that as a reason to not experience this. While it is important to listen and understand the concerns of friends and family prior to you leaving, don’t let them scare you out of doing something you want to do. Waiting around for someone else to want to go somewhere as bad as you do, and then hoping they commit to buying a ticket is next to impossible and I didn’t want to wait any longer. So why wait? Just go! Being on my own I learned a TON and I hope this post will help you in your own solo endeavors.
